I think it’s fair to say that we are all aware that bottled water is more expensive than tap. However, what many don’t know is just how much more expensive bottled is.

Indeed, this was certainly the case with us here at Back to the Tap. While we were obviously cognizant of bottled water’s steep markup, it wasn’t until we really looked at the figures that we realised the extent of our ignorance.

Beverage companies are raking in a massive 688 million dollars every year from the sale of bottled water. Meanwhile, worldwide, the bottled water market is worth an estimated $22 billion dollars and consumption is expected to grow by a staggering 7% each year!

The average cost of a litre of tap water here in Australia is just .001¢. While bottled water comes in, on average, at a whopping $2.38 per litre.

To put these figures into something a little more comprehensible; you could refill a single bottle with tap water every day for 8 years before it costs what the original bottle of water costs. Insane.

Or perhaps this handy graphic from CHOICE.com.au can put things into perspective.

78,000 times more expensive. Let that sink in.

And, if you add to these crazy numbers the fact that, globally, 40-60% of all bottled water is actually merely filtered tap water, then things get even more ridiculous.

We can’t force you to stop drinking bottled water. And, truth be told, we don’t want to have to. These figures should speak for themselves. If the environment isn’t your concern, then surely your back pocket is. Remember these facts next time you’re in line to buy that bottled water and, hopefully, you’ll make the right decision.

  2. Facts are facts! Can’t disagree with this!

  3. What a great and informative post! Bottled water really is expensive. $22 billion dollars really is a staggering number. Bottled water relies heavily on marketing as there a no real benefits over bottled water from tap water. On top of that bottled water is just horrible for the environment. It takes 700 years for the plastic in bottled water to even START to break down. In the meantime, they lay littered in our oceans or on our streets. This a great campaign with eye-opening facts. Thanks for sharing!
